Using Umlaute in US7ASCII – doesn’t work, does it?

Creating an Oracle database with character set U7ASCII should be an exception nowadays. So if you try dbca (database configuration assistant) in Oracle 11g you don’t even have the choice by default. But it’s still possible – in all current Oracle versions. If that’s what you really wanted – I don’t know!

Quest Backup Reporter

backup-overview

Since April 21st there is the new Quest Backup Reporter. With this it is really simple to create reports on Oracle RMAN backups. The backup reporter gets the data from the control files and/or the RMAN catalog, if this exists. It is very interesting that in the control file more information about the backup is saved than in a RMAN catalog and this is exactly the reason why you can use both sources simultaneously with the backup reporter.

Switch from WE8 Character Set to Unicode

As mentioned in my blog “Character Set Conversion with CSALTER – Does that actually work?” it is however possible to change the character set of the database with CSSCAN or CSALTER, but that does not help if you saved US7ASCII characters in the database, as it is quite usual in Europe, because only the data dictionary is being adjusted but not the data in the tables.

Automatic Memory Management – it’s great isn’t it?

As you might have read in my previous blogs I did some tests with Oracle 10g and 11g on Linu 6 Update 1 – and it works even though there is no official support from Oracle. Due to a presentation for the German Oracle User Group (DOAG) I did some tests with Automatic Memory Management and in this blog I like to share some experiences with you.

Changing the IP Addresses in a RAC Cluster in the Oracle 11g Release 2 (11.2.0.3)

Due to moving into the new office I had to change several configurations in my infrastructure. Sure, the Linux and Windows systems were changed very quickly, the virtual machines did not cause any problems either. The switch of my RAC cluster then was a little bit more difficult, because it is not all done by changing the entries in the /etc/hosts, there is actually much more required.

Oracle RAC 11.2.0.3 on VMware ESXi

grid installation

The system was build up to test some tools, i.e. the new Oracle Cloud Control 12c, Toad for Oracle and Spotlight (Quest Software) with their RAC components and the HLMM (Herrmann & Lenz Monitoring Module). And this was not about “certificated” configurations or even to set up a productive environment, but about creating a RAC database with minimum effort.

Do you really need one year old Logs and Traces for your Oracle Database?

With Release 11g Oracle introduced the concept of the Automatic Diagnostic Repository (ADR) which (in theory) is an independant directory structure for all kind of logs and traces for the database, listener and other Oracle products. The content is mostly stored twice (as text or traditional trace file and in xml format). So the size of each individual directory can easily become several GB. Nothing to worry for todays disk spaces but annoying if you really need to find some relevant information. The good news is that there is a purge mechanism associated with it so that old logs and

Indoorkiting – my favorite sports

Indoorkiting Leipzig

Do you know what Indoorkiting is? It’s flying kites in gyms, halles, hotels, churches and everywhere were you have no wind but some space. Those kites are similar to the once you might have seen at the coast (with one line, two lines or four lines) but very lightwight. My favorite kite is called “Poldi” and was designed by my dear friend Ralf Elias. It’s a two line kite with a size of approx. 180 cm and a weight of about 80 gramm. This picture shows my daughter and me in the main halle in Leipzig doing a pair demo
